PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla.--The honor guard is arguably the most recognizable unit in any uniformed service. It serves as the face of the military at events ranging from presidential inaugurations and the solemn duty of veterans' funerals.
On these public occasions, the honor guard inspires patriotism and pays tribute to the nation's heritage. This special service within the service embodies the core values of Integrity, Service Before Self, and Excellence.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Damon Williams confessed, “I was comfortable in my daily routine. When asked to volunteer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Since joining this team, my perspective of honor has changed. You can't grasp the privilege of being a guardsman until that first funeral or wreath-laying”.
Serving in the military provides numerous benefits, but none is more significant than the somber right of a veteran to receive a military funeral. This sacred ceremony pays tribute to their service and sacrifice.
The honor guard, composed of dedicated service members, stands tall and formidable, even amidst moments of profound grief. They perform their duties with unwavering resolve, ensuring that every detail is executed flawlessly during significant events.
“We practice relentlessly,” explains Williams, “so that when it counts, we will not fail, regardless of the temperature or the crowd. The meticulous precision demands focus and discipline.”
During the ceremony, everyone’s attention is drawn to the flag as it is lifted from the coffin, then carefully folded thirteen times with the stars on top.
Cradled in the guardsman's arms, the flag is then passed to another member of the team, a poignant transfer of memory from a grateful nation, before finally being presented to the loved ones who will carry the fallen’s legacy.
This powerful symbolism reflects the military's values: discipline, precision, respect, and honor.
From perfectly aligned ribbons to unwavering gazes fixed on the horizon, every detail is paramount. For the honor guard, this is not just another day; it is a day to honor a fallen hero.
Pushing through challenges is synonymous with the military ethos, and the honor guard visually embodies the very best of what the military represents.
When asked if he would encourage others to volunteer for honor guard, Williams responded with a resounding “YES”!
