SAN DIEGO – Cmdr. Bobby Barber was relieved by Cmdr. Courtney Towles as commanding
officer of the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Canberra (LCS 30), Gold crew, during a
change of command ceremony held aboard the USS Midway Museum, May 30. Capt. Jose A. Roman,
commodore, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One, was the presiding officer and guest speaker at
the ceremony.
“Standing before you for the last time as your Commanding Officer is a distinctly profound honor I don't take lightly,” said Barber, “These past months and years serving alongside you all have been some of the most rewarding of my entire career - and its because of you.”
During Barber’s time in command, Canberra was the first U.S. Navy ship to commission internationally
where she sailed over 14,000 nautical miles to be part of the historic ceremony in Australia. He led the crew of Canberra Gold alongside the blue crew, in outreach events and fostered relationships with the city of Canberra, Australia. Also during Barber's tenure, Canberra was the first LCS to embark the mine countermeasure mission package.
“I greatly appreciate your dedication to leading USS Canberra Gold crew tremendously and
exceptionally.” said Capt. Jose Roman, commodore, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One. “I am
confident you will do great things at the 3rd Fleet.”
During the ceremony, Barber was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his superior
accomplishments and will be reporting to Commander, U.S. Third Fleet as the Current Operations Director.
Barber, a native of San Diego, is a graduate of the University of Southern California, and holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in Software Development from the Colorado Technical University.
Canberra is homeported in San Diego as a part of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One. Littoral
combat ships are fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in
near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century threats. LCS integrate
with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime
security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.
