In recognition of Earth Day, the Environmental Management Division (EMD) conducted its annual base cleanup aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 22, 2025.
This year marked the fourth consecutive installation-wide cleanup led by EMD, building on more than 13 years of community driven environmental stewardship with local beach and waterway initiatives. The event, held in conjunction with the global Earth Day observance, brought together 25 EMD personnel to collect and properly dispose of litter and waste across the installation.
“One of the things we always say thanks for is what we live on,” said Michael Taylor, supervisory environmental control specialist, EMD. “We live on this Earth, and if we make it worse than how we received it, our children and grandchildren are going to be in bad shape.”
Participants removed an estimated 2,200 pounds of trash from roadsides, recreational areas, and the Greenway trail. All collected material was weighed and sorted to ensure proper disposal of such hazardous waste, in accordance with applicable environmental regulations.
“The biggest achievement is making it a cleaner base,” said Taylor. “I want to keep it clean; it’s a base I love.”
Beyond cleanup efforts, the event also gave EMD personnel an opportunity to reflect on the broader importance of environmental protection.
“I take pride in the repairs we do on base,” said Mark Ramsdell, planner estimator, Public Works Facility Operations. “Events like this give us a chance to contribute to the bigger picture of environmental care.”
Earth Day, first celebrated in 1970, is recognized annually in 192 countries. According to the Defense Logistics Agency, the Department of Defense’s 2025 Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet, Protect Our Future.”
“The end goal is to make the installation more presentable,” Taylor added. “We just want to make it as livable and clean as we can.”
