Leaders with the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) held a rededication ceremony for the IBCT’s renovated command suite at the Norman Armed Forces Reserve Center in Norman, Oklahoma, May 24, 2024, to honor the legacy of the “Thunderbirds.
The 45th IBCT traces its lineage to the 45th Infantry Division, which participated in multiple campaigns in World War II and the Korean War. In 1968, the 45th Infantry Division was reorganized and redesignated as the 45th Infantry Brigade, and in 2008 transitioned to the 45th IBCT.
The 45th IBCT command suite was redesigned with displays of campaign streamers acknowledging participation in World War II and Korea, as well as the Global War on Terror. The IBCT staff, with assistance from the 45th Infantry Division Museum and State Historian, located pictures and documents from each campaign in which the 45th participated, creating a display for each campaign.
“The 45th has a great history, and we don’t do nearly enough to honor that history,” said Col. Andrew Ballenger, commander of the 45th IBCT, stated. “My hope is that this display will help our current Thunderbirds better understand the legacy of our predecessors and reinforce their pride in the Thunderbird patch they wear on their shoulder.”
