Truman Sailor Wins Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year

In a remarkable display of dedication and leadership, Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Justin Weide earned the 2023 John Finn Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year award, Aug. 25. Weide’s outstanding achievements and contributions as the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) ordnance control leading petty officer set him apart from his peers. The award is a testament to his exemplary performance and leadership within the aviation ordnance community.

The John Finn Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year award is a highly esteemed recognition within the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Aviation ordnancemen from both branches gather annually at a convention held in Reno, Nevada. The convention serves as a platform for these dedicated professionals to showcase their accomplishments over the previous year. Participants submit comprehensive packages detailing their achievements, leadership, and contributions in the aviation ordnance field.

Exceptional leadership and Weide’s unyielding commitment to excellence during the ship’s nine-month deployment paved the way to earning the honor. The hard work and dedication of the Sailors under his guidance also contributed to his success.

“I owe it to all the sailors I work with on a day-to-day basis that made it easy to lead,” said Weide, crediting his team for making his leadership role manageable and effective.

The moment of victory was nothing short of exhilarating for Weide. He recalls the unexpected call from his Master Chief, who shared the news of his triumph. “My Master Chief called and surprised me with the news that I won. I really had no idea I was going to win. My overall reaction to the news was mass excitement.”

Weide’s dedication has not gone unnoticed by those working alongside him. When asked about Weide’s achievement, Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Blake Cayson stated, “I think he deserves it. He has put in a lot of work to help us all and make things run smoothly.”

His ability to lead and inspire those around him and his exceptional accomplishments have rightfully earned him the John Finn Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year award. Weide’s journey exemplifies the core values and spirit of excellence that continue to drive the success of the U.S. Navy’s aviation ordnance personnel.

Truman is the flagship of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCGS) and is currently undergoing a planned incremental availability (PIA) onboard Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
