The 127th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard, is seeking military members to serve in the Base Honor Guard. Honor Guard is an opportunity for current service members to serve outside the boundaries of the base and in the community. Members of the Honor Guard conduct ceremonial events that pay tribute to veterans and their families. Their responsibilities include military funeral honors, flag-folding ceremonies, and representing the armed forces in community outreach events. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring that the memory and service of military personnel are honored with the utmost respect and dignity.
Wing military members can consider joining the Honor Guard anytime during their military career. This extra-duty position includes extra pay, opportunities to network, retirement points, and personal fulfillment.
"There is a humbling that comes with every one of these services, moments in time where you can feel what that veteran's service meant; it means so much more than can be expressed in the statement we convey when handing over the folded flag to family members," said Honor Guard member Tech. Sgt. Melissa Crabill-Nitz. "To be the person who places that flag in their loved one's hands, to be the person to render them their final salute, is truly an immeasurable reward."
Joining the Honor Guard is a privilege that also offers personal and professional growth.
"Being in the Honor Guard is a prime reflection of 'Service Before Self.' It is impossible not to develop a servant's heart while serving as a member. There are opportunities to form new relationships with members of our Honor Guard and members of the Honor Guard statewide and across the United States, increasing your personal network," said Crabill-Nitz.
Tech. Sgt. Raymond Stier, the program manager for the 127th Honor Guard, shares his perspective: "Serving in the Honor Guard is one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I have ever done. There is no greater feeling than honoring those members who have gone before me, those serving now, and those who will serve in the future. Honoring those members' families, their service, and their memories."
If you want to join the 127th Wing Honor Guard, contact Tech. Sgt. Raymond Stier, at 586-239-5453.
