On April 8, Easter weekend for the Americans and the end of spring break for Japanese school children, the 17th Ryukyuan-American Youth Friendship Baseball Tournament was held at ANA Ball Park in Urasoe City to deepen the friendship between Japan and the U.S. through sports. This event was hosted by the Consulate of the United States in Okinawa and co-hosted by Urasoe City.

Ten Japanese teams, aged 13 to 15, from throughout Okinawa, and two American high school teams from U.S. military bases participated. The Kubasaki Dragons of Kubasaki High School and Kadena Panthers of Kadena High School faced their Japanese counterparts in the tournament, and played together in a Ryukyuan-American All-Star game as the tournament finale.

The opening ceremony started at 8:00 a.m. with players marching onto the baseball field. Last year’s winner returned the champion flag, then Tetsuji Matsumoto, the mayor of Urasoe City, and Matthew S. Dolbow, consul general of the U.S. Consulate Naha, gave remarks.

Matsumoto said, “the purpose of this event is to deepen the friendship and goodwill between junior high and high school students, parents, and coaches from both the U.S. and Okinawa. I hope that all the athletes who have gathered here will enjoy this event and also show the results of your daily practice to the best of your ability.”

Dolbow commented that Japan and the U.S. are the world’s baseball powerhouses and Okinawa has produced many great players, and he hoped that future baseball stars might also play in the tournament, referring to the 2023 World Baseball Classic, which ended with the final played between Japan and the U.S. a few weeks before the event.

Representatives from both the American and Japanese teams recited oaths in both languages, promising fair play and to give their best effort. When Japanese player, Nirai Nakanndakari, captain of the Urasoe Boys Baseball Club, delivered his oath in English, he forgot the words and tried to recall, but at the end he looked at his note, as the spectators cheered him on. The second oath was delivered by Nicholas Adams, captain of the Kubasaki Dragons. He said his team would do their best in the competition.

The opening day tradition at the start of the first game is the ceremonial pitch. Last year, Dolbow took the role of first batter when Matsumoto threw the ceremonial pitch. This year they put the spotlight on Col. Andre M. Ingram, the Camp Kinser commander.

“The consulate invited us to send a representative to take the first pitch,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen E. Liszewski, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “Because Col. Ingram is the commander of Camp Kinser down here in Urasoe, and we knew that the mayor of Urasoe was going to be pitching, he is the perfect guy to go to bat.”

“I was nervous but very excited.” Ingram expressed that as the Camp Kinser commander and Matsumoto as Mayor of Urasoe City, they had met on many occasions in fostering their relationship.

Once the first pitch was over, the Kubasaki Dragons met the Urasoe Boys, and the three-day tournament began.

“We do not often have opportunities to compete against teams other than ourselves,” said David Wray, the head coach of the Dragons and Physical Education teacher at Kubasaki High School. “Whether we won or lost, it was an honor just to be included.” Wray said that the Japanese players were technically advanced, bunting and hitting the ball exactly where they wanted it to go. However, he was proud that his players did well against such powerful teams.

The game ended with a victory for the Dragons' seven to five.

“I think American teams are getting better and better every year,” said Takashi Yonamine, representative of Urasoe Boys. He said that American players are powerful even if they only play seasonally.

Urasoe Boys have participated in the Ryukyuan-American Youth Friendship Baseball Tournament since its launch in 2004, according to Yonamine. This tournament is a valuable experience for his players since they get to play against not only American players, but also players from teams in other leagues.

Kayano Occomy, mother of Dragons’ pitcher, Luka Occomy, who pitched against Urasoe Boys, thought that the American teams were at a disadvantage because they only practiced baseball for a few months in a year, but at the same time felt bad because the Dragons and Panthers players were older than their counterparts; however, after she talked to some Japanese mothers and was told that Japanese children could learn from American players how to show their excitement and enjoy the game to the fullest even when losing, she thought it was a win-win.

One of the Japanese on-lookers was surprised to see how American players added excitement to the game, and even their parents enjoyed the children’s performance from the bottom of their hearts by cheering loudly. She said that Japanese parents can learn from them.

“It's great to see sports, and the Japanese and American teams, playing against each other and enjoying the competition,” said Liszewski. “If they play together on the field, they're probably going to be friendly with each other when their paths cross in other parts of life. I think it breaks down barriers that may exist. If we can bring them together, there's a lot of goodness.”

　アメリカ人にとってはイースター、日本の小中高生にとっては春休みの終わりを告げる週末の４月８日、スポーツを通じて日米の友好を深めようと「第17回琉米中高生友好親善野球大会」が浦添市のＡＮＡボールパークで開催された。この大会は、浦添市にある在沖米国総領事館が主催し、浦添市が共催して実施してきた。

　沖縄県内から13歳から15歳までの10チーム、米軍基地から２チームが参加。フォスター基地内にあるクバサキ高校のクバサキ・ドラゴンズと嘉手納基地内のカデナ高校のカデナ・パンサーズはトーナメントで日本勢と対戦し、大会のフィナーレを飾る琉米オールスター戦でも対決した。

　午前８時、選手たちが球場へ入場行進し、開会式が始まった。昨年の優勝チームが優勝旗を返還した後、松本哲治浦添市長、在沖米国総領事館のマシュー・Ｓ・ドルボー総領事が挨拶した。

　松本市長は「この大会は、米国と沖縄の中高生、保護者、指導者の友好親善を深めることを目的に開催されており、ここに集まった選手の皆さんには、この大会を楽しみながらも、日頃の練習の成果を思う存分発揮できるよう願っています」と述べた。

　ドルボー氏は、大会の数週間前に行われた日米の決勝戦で幕を閉じた２０２３年のワールド・ベースボール・クラシックに触れ「日米は世界の野球強豪国であり、沖縄は多くの偉大な選手を輩出している」とコメントし、未来の名選手がこの大会でプレーするのではないかと期待した。

　日米両チームの代表が日本語と英語で選手宣誓を行い、フェアプレーと全力を尽くすことを約束。浦添少年野球クラブのキャプテン、仲村渠虹来（なかんだかりにらい）君は英語での言葉を忘れた様子で、思い出そうとしたが、観客の声援を受け、最後はメモを見つつ宣誓を終わらせた。二人目の宣誓は、クバサキ・ドラゴンズのキャプテン、ニコラス・アダムス君が大会に向け全力を尽くすと誓った。

　初戦の冒頭には、開幕戦の伝統である始球式が行われた。昨年は、松本市長が球を投げ、ドルボー氏が先頭打者を務めた。今年は、キャンプ・キンザーの司令官であるアンドレ・Ｍ・イングラム大佐にスポットライトが当てられた。

　「イングラム大佐は、ここ浦添市にあるキャンプ・キンザーの司令官であり、浦添市長がピッチャーを務めることも知っていたので、彼が打席に立つことはうってつけでした」と米海兵隊太平洋基地司令官のスティーブン・Ｅ・リズウスキー少将は語った。

　「緊張しましたが、とても興奮しました」とイングラム大佐は言い、キャンプ・キンザー司令官として、一方は浦添市の市長として、関係を育む上で二人は何度もお互い顔を合わせてきたことを明かした。

　始球式が終わると、クバサキ・ドラゴンズと浦添ボーイズが対戦し、３日間のトーナメントが幕を開けた。

　ドラゴンズのヘッドコーチでクバサキ高校の体育教師デイビッド・レイ氏は、「自分たち以外のチームと対戦する機会はあまりありません」と語る。「勝っても負けても、この大会に参加できたことだけでも名誉なことです」レイ氏は、日本の選手たちはバントしたり、思い通りの場所にボールを打ったりと、技術的に優れていたという。しかし、そのような強豪を相手によくやったと胸を張った。

　試合は７対５でドラゴンズの勝利に終わった。

　浦添ボーイズ代表の與那嶺尊（よなみねたかし）氏は「アメリカのチームは年々良くなっていると思います。アメリカの選手はシーズン中にしかプレーをしていなくても力があるので」と感想を述べた。

　与那嶺氏によると、浦添ボーイズは「琉米中高生友好親善野球大会」に大会開設の２００４年当初から参加している。アメリカ人選手だけでなく、他リーグの選手とも対戦できるこの大会は、選手たちにとって貴重な経験になっているという。

　浦添ボーイズと対戦したドラゴンズのルカ・オコミー投手の母、カヤノ・オコミーさんは、アメリカのチームは一年のうち数カ月しか野球の練習をしないため不利だと思いつつも、ドラゴンズやパンサーズは年上なので申し訳ないと思っていた。しかし、日本の母親たちに話を聞くと、子どもたちはアメリカの選手から、たとえ試合に負けたとしても、興奮したり、全力で試合を楽しむ様子を学ぶことができると言われ、ウィンウィンだと思ったそうだ。

　また、観戦していた日本人のひとりは、アメリカ人選手たちが試合を盛り上げ、その親たちまでもが大きな声援を送って子どもたちの活躍を心から楽しんでいる様子に驚き、日本の親も見習うべきところがあるのではと話した。

　リズウスキー少将は「スポーツ、しかも日米のチームが互いに対戦し、競争を楽しんでいる光景を見ることができるのは素晴らしいことです」と言う。「フィールドで一緒にプレーすることで、将来、人生のどこかで出会うことになったときにも、お互いに良い関係を築けるでしょう。存在するかもしれない隔たりを取り払うことができると思います。もし彼らを一つにすることができれば、たくさんの素晴らしいことにつながるでしょう」と話した。
