NOROFLK, Va. (July 20, 2023) Launching an aircraft in virtual reality is now possible for Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69).

The Multipurpose Reconfigurable Training System (MRTS 3D) is a photo-realistic virtual training environment intended for a variety of ratings. Using touch display screens, the simulator allows operators to virtually carry out all the steps to take on the role of their designated rate.

“One person can be a panel operator, one person can be a deck edge operator, and they can simulate working together on an aircraft,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 1st Class George Moore, IKE’s Training Department leading petty officer. “From the instructor’s screen, I can control different variables such as which aircraft are on fire or faults in their systems to throw a curve-ball at them to see how they’ll react.”

All Sailors aboard IKE can benefit from MRTS 3D and are welcome to experience the training to further their individual rating knowledge and can reserve the MRTS 3D for small classes of 12 to 15 Sailors. Sailors new to IKE in particular are able to receive practical training in a controlled, safe environment in preparation for real-world scenarios.

“I can set up directions for them, or I can slow it down to their pace,” said Moore. “When they start standing watches under instruction, they’ll be more confident in their ability to perform the tasks at hand.”

The training currently caters to multiple ratings including aviation boatswain’s mates and quartermasters. According to Moore, Training Department’s goal is to eventually have a simulator for every job in the Navy.

“In direct support of the chief of naval personnel’s MyNavyHR strategic design to deliver ready-relevant learning, MRTS 3D will evolve into a capability that allows commands to train on station without temporary-assigned-duty funding at the point of need,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jason McClinton, IKE’s training officer. “We are also going to look into how the system can play a role in personnel qualification standards as well as impact on Navy-wide advancement examination scores. IKE looks forward to being the first CVN to operationally deploy with MRTS 3D aboard.”

MRTS 3D started out as a shore-based system in support of training commands to use a single hardware device to give photo-realistic, virtual training for a variety of systems. The capability is now being rolled out to the Navy’s fleet.

The IKE CSG is an integrated combat weapons system that delivers superior combat capability to deter, and if necessary, defeat America’s adversaries in support of national security. Dwight D. Eisenhower is the flagship of CSG-2. CSG-2 is comprised of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW 3), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22, the Information Warfare Commander, and the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58).
