EASTOVER, S.C. – The 218th Regional Training Institute (RTI), with the South Carolina National Guard, hosted the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) for the first time, December 2022 at McCrady Training Center in Eastover, S.C.
The NSCC is designed for youth ages 13 to 18, where cadets participate in local unit drill, and learn values of discipline, accountability and teamwork. Sea Cadets wear uniforms, learn about the maritime services and a wide variety of career fields, and advance through ranks that mirror the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. When completed, cadets graduate recruit training or orientation; a fast paced seven to14-day training focused on basic military instruction and team building.
“The Sea Cadet program is offered all over the Country,” said 1st Sgt. Brian Deese, 218th RTI first sergeant. “This Winter Training event was the first ever for the Carolina training group. The reason we were able to form the partnership was all about timing. December is a very slow month for the 218th RTI and McCrady Training Center. The availability of billets, and training areas actually worked out to their advantage. It also helped the South Carolina National Guard out by having throughput of numbers for McCrady Training Center during the month of December. Typically, there is a limited number of Soldiers moving through McCrady during December.”
Typically, all of the recruits from this area would attend NSCC training in Florida. But holding it at MTC provided an advantage of being a shorter distance of travel for cadets and their parents or guardians, and friends and family who wanted to attend the graduation.
“It helped the parents and the staff with the training being conducted at McCrady,” said Deese. “It was also a cost benefit to the Sea Cadet Program to hold the training here and also benefited and produced some funding for the South Carolina National Guard.”
Even though this was the first time for the South Carolina National Guard to partner with the Sea Cadet program, it was a successful partnership and everything went as planned.
“The training event went very well in all aspects,” said Deese. “The partnership was very well established and worked great. I would say with the overall success of the training event, I could not imagine it not being something that happens annually in December moving forward. However, it will be up to the Sea Cadet program and the South Carolina National Guard Command team to determine future events.”
