Navy Region Hawaii hosted a Joint Services Suicide Prevention Proclamation ceremony on Sept. 23 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) chapel in support of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
This year's theme is Connect to Protect: Support is Within Reach. Connections to family, friends, community and resources play a critical role in suicide prevention efforts. Every day we can take extra time and action to show our support to those that are experiencing hardships and unforeseen circumstances.
Rear Adm. Stephen Barnett, commander, Navy Region Hawaii led a call to action for those attending the ceremony, calling on his personal experience to emphasize the importance of looking out for others.
"If you notice someone struggling and you think they are at risk, don't be afraid to speak up," said Barnett. "If you are the person struggling or experiencing thoughts of suicide, don't be afraid. Ask for help."
"Suicide affects individuals, families, and our entire community," said Barnett. "This month, and this proclamation are the starting point for a year-long conversation about how to be there for every military member, every day."
Stefany Garcia, JBPHH Military and Family Support Center's education services specialist followed Barnett's remarks with a reading of the 2022 Suicide Prevention and Awareness proclamation. She also personally thanked the Joint Military Suicide Prevention Task Force.
Concluding the ceremony, Barnett and Col. Michael Staples, deputy commander, JBPHH signed the proclamation.
"Thank you to everyone who worked to put on this event and thank you all for coming today, and committing to do your part to prevent further deaths by suicide," said Barnett.
