    189th Airlift Wing

A second nursing station for the 189th Airlift Wing was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 189th Logistics Readiness Squadron, on Sept. 8, 2022, at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. The room was strategically placed in the 189th LRS in order to provide a designated space for one of the wing’s largest squadrons and its breastfeeding mothers. The second room was created after a department-wide policy for nursing and lactation rooms was published in November 2016 encouraging military facilities to provide space for nursing mothers.

More than 20 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to show support for the new room. Among the supporters was Col. Tina Lipscomb, the 189 AW vice commander, Capt. Michelle Smith, the 189th Medical Group public health officer, and representatives from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Department of Nursing.

The show of support ensured the longevity of the room and the entire project. Kenya Eddings, Director of the Minority Health Commission, worked with Capt. Heather Baxter and other members of the wing donating time, resources, and money to make the room comfortable and usable. Smith worked with the state of Arkansas to acquire a $500 grant and used it to furnish the area and equip the space.

“The creation of the room itself was a combined effort with Capt. Smith, Staff. Sgt. Blaylock, Tech. Sgt. Erwin and myself,” said Baxter. “The 189th Civil Engineer Squadron helped us a lot too by making sure we had all our electricity hooked up, our tv hung and furniture secured.”

When asked about more rooms throughout the wing, Smith said the idea is completely possible, suggesting the maintenance group as a possible location.

“It was an honor to be present and support this vital resource to military moms,” said Rebecca P. Sartini, the UAMS Service Line Assistant Director of Nursing. “It was amazing to see so many men in attendance, It speaks volumes to the support [at the wing].”
