SAN NICOLAS ISLAND, Calif. – Culinary Specialist (CS) 2nd Class Johnpaul Pedero, from Salem, New Hampshire, assigned to Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), San Nicolas Island (SNI), has been recognized as the August 2022 Sailor in the Spotlight.

“Pedero is an outstanding Sailor on the rise,” said Cdr. Keith Buckingham, officer in charge, SNI, NBVC. “He is leading from the front, teaching others, and deserves to be recognized.”

Pedero joined the Navy in 2008 and has been serving onboard NBVC since Jan. 2022.

“I joined the Navy to keep a promise I made to my grandfather,” said Pedero. “I kept my promise and now I focus on education and experience that the Navy offers.”

Pedero is the lead Chef at the Fox Den, a multiuse Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) food and beverage facility onboard SNI which is manned by Sailors and civilians.

“The Fox Den is a hybrid island dinning facility that offers unique responsibilities working alongside civilian chefs and offering experience outside of normal CS duties,” said Buckingham.

Pedero recently won first place in a Navy Region Southwest Culinary Competition in San Diego, before earning second place at the Navy’s Culinary Finals onboard Great Lakes Training Command in Chicago.

Prior to joining NBVC Pedero was assigned the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN73).

NBVC is comprised of three distinct operational facilities: Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island. It is Ventura County’s largest employer and protects Southern California’s largest coastal wetlands through its award-winning environmental program.
