Fort Harrison, Mont. – At the request of local officials in Carbon County, 16 Montana National Guard Soldiers have been mobilized to assist with the safety of travelers along damaged roads in the Red Lodge area. Following assembly and in processing at Fort Harrison, these Soldiers departed at 3:30 p.m. and are scheduled to arrive in the flood area Wednesday evening.
The Soldiers will staff seven road checkpoints to free law enforcement personnel for other duties. The mission is scheduled to run from 15 June to 22 June.
This new activation begins as Montana Army National Guard helicopters continue to provide support to Search and Rescue operations. Since June 13th, Guard helicopters have rescued 87 people and flown more than 41 hours in support of Search and Rescue operations.
Potential further deployments of helicopter and ground support are being examined. The Montana National Guard can provide assistance at the request of and in support of our local and state partners.
