NAVAL STATION MAYPORT (10 June, 2022) -- As the salt infused Atlantic breeze mixes with the sound of music, children laughing in a bounce house, and the cheers of their parents – summer had undoubtedly arrived for the Sailors of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron (LCSRON) 2 and their families during the first major command event in two years.

“It’s really big for us because this is the first time, we’ve been able to get together as a command, this size, since the Covid-19 pandemic began,” said Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 2 Command Master Chief, Quincy Bentley. “The biggest thing is we just want the Sailors to come out and enjoy themselves, bring their family out and build on the comradery.”

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) sponsored gathering took place outdoors under the main pavilion at The Mayport Beacon, not far from sandy beach shores. Attendees enjoyed music, games and barbeque.

The planning for the Family Day started in January when Operations Specialist 1st Class Cahiquita Oscar, MWR president, presented the idea as morale booster for the command and their family members.

The Family Day came together with the help of the MWR members, and volunteers throughout the command.

“I think the biggest thing is just having people that you can rely on,” said MWR vice-president Yeoman 1st Class Jazmin Maria.

“I think it’s pretty awesome. It’s a big turnout,” said Navy spouse and mother of two, Mandy Mosley. “The music is on. Everyone looks happy. The kids are jumping, and my boys were happy to come.”

With the first major command event in over two years in the books, plans have already started for the Command Holiday Party slated for December.

“That’s the next really big one that we are looking forward to pulling together,” said Bentley.

When asked about how he measured the success of this event, MWR member Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Brent Soenksen simply responded, “from the smiles.”
