WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The South Carolina National Guard participated in the 2021 Winter Preparation Week kickoff, Nov. 30, 2021, at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division in West Columbia, South Carolina.
The week is an opportunity for state agencies and citizens to assess their preparation for potentially hazardous winter weather and to encourage South Carolina citizens to assess their own preparedness and make any necessary changes and improvements.
“With any storm that we have in the state, preparedness is the key,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Jones, deputy adjutant general for South Carolina. “Now is the time to get prepared, even though extreme winter weather doesn’t typically come until January or February, nature can strike at any time, so you have to be prepared.”
A significant aspect of readiness is assessing the risks and being prepared for the possibility of dealing with emergencies when they arrive. The South Carolina Air and Army National Guard, South Carolina State Guard, and other state agencies prepare all year to react in a timely manner to all types of potential crises and weather emergencies.
“Your South Carolina Military Department stands at the ready to support any request from the agencies in the state,” said Jones.
Although the state rarely sees severe winter weather, as recently as January 2018, South Carolina was hit with rain, sleet, and snow that significantly impacted much of the state and its citizens. In the winter storm of 2014, more than 364,000 citizens experienced power outages and more than 550 needed emergency shelter.
“To the people of South Carolina, winter preparedness begins with you. And that means having a plan, communicating your plan, understanding the risks and mitigating those risks, and finally, being able to respond to the advisories from our state agencies and from our national weather service in order to keep you and your families safe,” said Jones.
“We know that with winter weather, there comes hazards that we do not often deal with, but we know that they are out there,” added Jones. “And if they happen, we are prepared. The South Carolina National Guard has the training, the personnel and the equipment, and is ready and able to assist local and state agencies to get citizens of South Carolina through those difficult times, should they arise.”
