Marine Corps Installations Pacific

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, OKINAWA, Japan – Business professionals from Global Tekijuku Business School attended a brief and tour Nov. 18 hosted by U.S. Marines with Marine Corps Installations Pacific on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan.

Col. Neil Owens, assistant chief of staff of G-7, government and external affairs, Marine Corps Installations Pacific, led a Marine Corps 101 brief covering an array of topics, including security issues, administration and economics. Following the brief, the students participated in a tour of the air traffic tower to provide information on how the Marine Corps and MCAS Futenma play a part of national security.

“This is a group of business men and women from the Osaka area who are interested in learning more about Japan security issues and how the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma contribute to the defense of Japan,” said Owens.

There were 14 members from the school that attended the event to enhance their knowledge on security issues to help maintain the US-Japan alliance. The Global Tekijuku, a business school, provides human resources training to their students, focusing on practical learning and effective personal networking skills to promote solid leaders.

“One question they asked was, what can they do as business men and woman to help contribute to the security issues in Japan and any advice we have for them”, said Owens.

The Global Tekijuku, was named after the Tekijuku led by Koan Ogata, a famous historical figure, remembered as the founder of Western medicine and rangaku scholar in Osaka, Japan, who played an essential role in the era of Meiji Restoration.

“We needed to deepen our knowledge on security issues, and with this knowledge, we want to spread it to other business people,” said Sayuri Shirrahara, a member of Global Tekijuku Business School. “We are studying about the security issue in Japan. In China and other Asian countries, we are taught it is important to know the responsibilities of the US military and the Japan Self-Defense Force. That is the reason we visited this base at this time.”

The Assistant Chief of Staff, G-7, provides advice and support regarding political-military and policy matters of interest to the Marine Corps throughout Japan. Also, manages the relationship with the Government of Japan, Okinawa Prefecture Government, and local cities to facilitate support to our operating forces, other commands, service members, and family members.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to reach out to some people who have an interest in security matters, and who have an interest in discovering how the Marine Corps and US forces contribute to the defenses in Japan”, said Owens.
