    SAN DIEGO (Nov. 10, 2021) –A San Antonio native, Actkinson is the newest commanding officer of an Independence-variant littoral combat ship.

    Cmdr. John Actkinson became the commanding officer of USS Charleston (LCS 18) Gold Crew, during a change of command ceremony at Naval Base San Diego chapel, Nov. 10, 2021.

    As commanding officer, Actkinson maintains absolute authority and responsibility to ensure the safe handling of Charleston and the safety, well-being and proficiency of the crew.

    “I am both honored and humbled to be taking command of such an amazing crew,” said Actkinson. “I look forward to continuing to show the fleet how capable and ready this crew is for any and all mission tasking!”

    Prior to serving as the commanding officer, Actkinson served as Charleston Gold Crew’s executive officer.

    Actkinson holds a bachelor’s degree in oceanography from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree in engineering acoustics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

    The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed to operate in near-shore environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. The LCS is capable of supporting forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence.
