Domestic Violence Awareness Month is being observed at Chievres Air Base and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe via an informational campaign throughout October.

“One in three women and one in four men are affected by domestic violence,” said Brooke Campbell, the Family Advocacy Program manager for the Benelux region. “This month is used to bring awareness to those statistics, warning signs, and ways that people can help and support victims of domestic violence.”

The Army Community Service Family Advocacy team worked to bring awareness to the Benelux community through their “Walk in Her Shoes” scenario-based event on Chievres AB Oct. 28.

“People will get cards, and be able to kind of live the life of a victim who's trying to leave an abusive relationship,” said Campbell, describing the event beforehand. “They'll get to make decisions as that victim and figure out what to do. They’ll [try] to make choices for the victim to survive, but surprisingly, it is super hard to make those choices and to try to walk that path.”

This event's intent is to bring awareness to what a victim has to go through when they're navigating through an abusive relationship.

“It's really important that we observe this month …,” said Campbell. “We want to make sure that people understand there are support services to help them and there are support services to help their friend.”

Cambell also noted that sharing statistics, learning the facts about domestic violence, being aware of what the warning signs are, and asking people if something is wrong are a few ways to help with domestic violence awareness.

The ACS Family Advocacy also wants those who are currently experiencing domestic violence to know they are not alone.

“If people need help, they can call the Family Advocacy program,” said Campbell. “We can provide services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If people want further support like therapy or counseling, the chaplains are a great resource, Military and Family Life Counseling is a great resource, and behavioral health is a great resource.”

The Family Advocacy Program team can be reached on their Belgium hotline at 032-472-90-1068 or their Netherlands hotline at 031-613-21-6737. To learn more about this program and other regional resources, visit the official U.S. Army Garrison Benelux website at https://home.army.mil/benelux/.
