Stay vigilant, Marine’s mindset saves woman’s life at sea / 気を抜くな、海兵隊哲学が溺れる女性を救う

What began as a normal weekend for a Marine from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma became an unforgettable day for one local swimmer who was caught in a rip current at Mermaid’s Grotto, west of Onna Village and south of Cape Manzamo, Oct. 4, 2020.

Staff Sgt. Billy C. Dixson, a recovery crew leader with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, spent his weekend at the popular snorkeling and diving spot. When he was preparing to leave for the day, the incident happened.

According to Dixson, he heard a scream and rushed towards the voice to find a Japanese lady calling for someone to help for her friend, Ms. Miyagi. Dixson looked at where the person pointed, but did not see anything.

"The fear of the unknown set in," Dixson recalled. "I wasn't sure if I could get to her in time, so I swam to the direction as fast as I could."
With no sight of Miyagi, Dixon dove down three meters and saw her underwater and noticed she had no power left to resurface.

According to Dixson, when he pulled her to the surface, she stopped moving. He conducted the Heimlich Maneuver on her while swimming backwards and managed to clear her airway by the time he reached the shore.

Dixson expressed that he was lucky he still had fins on which helped him to swim through the rip current.

His heroic action came to light when Miyagi and her friend delivered a letter of gratitude to the gate of MCAS Futenma about three weeks after the incident. They had found him on a social media by looking up his name which he had given them at the shore.

"As Marines, this is something that is ingrained into us. We stay vigilant and we’re always looking to assist," said Dixson.

　１０月４日、恩納村の西、万座毛の南にある「人魚の洞窟」で、在沖海兵隊普天間航空基地所属の海兵隊員のいつもの週末が、またある地元の海水浴客にとってはより一層忘れられない日となった。

　第1海兵航空団の復旧隊隊長であるビリー・C・ディクソン二等軍曹は、週末をシュノーケリングとダイビングで人気の穴場で過ごしていた。彼が素潜りから引き上げようとした時、事故は起こった。

　ディクソン二等軍曹によると、彼は女性の悲鳴を聞いて、その声がする方へ走った。そして、離岸流に巻き込まれた友人のために助けを求めている女性を見つけた。彼は示された方向を見たが、何も見えなかった。

　「未知の恐怖が襲ってきました。間に合うかどうかわからなかったので、全力でその方向に泳ぎました」とディクソン二等軍曹は振り返る。

　溺れているであろう女性が見当たらなかったため、彼は3メートル程潜り、ようやく水面に再浮上しようする気配のない女性を見つけた。

　ディクソン二等軍曹によると、彼が女性を水面に引き上げた時、彼女は動かなくなったという。彼は岸に向かって逆泳ぎをしながら、応急処置のハイムリック法を行い女性の気道を確保することに成功した。

　ディクソン二等軍曹は、まだ、足ヒレを付けたままだったことが、離岸流の中を泳いで素早く女性の元まで行くことを可能にしたと言い、幸いだったと話した。

　この英雄的な行動が公になったのは事故から約３週間後、救助された女性とその友人が普天間基地飛行場のゲートに感謝状を届けた時だった。彼女らは、彼が岸で名乗った名前をSNSで調べることによって、彼を見つけた。

　「海兵隊員として、これは私たちに根付いているものです。私たちは警戒を怠らず、常に何か支援出来ることはないか注意しています｣と、ディクソン二等軍曹は語った。
