Embracing a youthful spirit: Marine volunteers act in skit for story time recording / 童心に返って - 海兵隊員、コロナ禍で新たな試み、読み聞か​せ寸劇

After volunteer as crossing guards at a nearby elementary school Oct. 20, 2020, four Marines prepared to do something new at Kitatama community center in Chatan. They were about to make their acting debut, bringing scenes from a children’s book to life.

According to Hiroko Tomimura, community relations specialist for Camps Foster and Lester, the local schools limit access for outsiders and avoid crowds as much as possible due to COVID-19. Therefore, Marines cannot have story time with the children like they used to.

"I suggested giving the school a video of Marines reading and acting out the story to solve the problem," Tomimura explained.

Tomimura handed over a book and told one Marine to read and the others to act out the scenes. They were confused at first, because there was no audience for them and they were initially unaware that they were going to be on camera. Tomimura provided them with handmade costumes, popcorn and other necessary items for the play.

Even though Tomimura has coordinated volunteer opportunities for Marines to have story time with local school children since 2010, this was her first time recording a skit to be shown at a later time.

The book Tomimura chose was "Popcorn" by Frank Asch. Since Halloween was around the corner, she hoped children would enjoy the Halloween atmosphere watching the video.

Tomimura directed the whole performance. She instructed Marines on the stage to listen to the story read in English first and then take actions while Tomimura read in Japanese.

The Marines completed the video in one take, having rehearsed the story only once. Although the volunteers acted shy during the early stage of the rehearsal, when the camera started rolling, they were energetic and motivated.

"I felt young again even though I will be turning 21 in two months," said Lance Cpl. Nathan MacLain from Headquarter and Support Battalion. "If we prepared more, we could’ve done better, but I think we did well for the first time."

Lance Cpl. Clint A. Rider of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, expressed, "I never read a book for a story time, so it was different. I tried to make it more interesting for the children and read it clear enough so children can understand me and enjoy the story."

After having taken part in the performance, Toru Tokuzato, district mayor of Jaagaru said with a smile, "although it is rare to do something together (with Marines), we did this short play together for the children, and it was really good. I really enjoyed it even though the last time I have done such performance was when I was in elementary."

Tomimura was happy with the DVD she received from the Marines as they had printed the cover of the book to the disk. She thought it may be more appealing to schools when she provides it to them for their story time.

"I believe children will love it. They will see how hard the grown-ups tried for them, so children will be happy," Seizen Sakihama, headman of Kitatama District, who also participated in the short play ensured.

　10月20日、最寄りの小学校で登校時の横断歩道見守りボランティアを終えたばかりの４人の海兵隊員が、北谷町の北玉公民館で何か新たに取り組むための準備をしていた。彼らは絵本のシーンに命を吹き込むという俳優デビューを迎えようとしているのだ。

　キャンプ・フォスター＆レスターの富村浩子渉外官によると、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響で、地域の学校は部外者の出入りを制限し、できるだけ混雑を避けている。そのため、隊員達の読み聞かせを行うことが出来ない。富村渉外官は「そこで、すべての問題を解決する案として、『録画された』読み聞かせのＤＶＤを学校に提供することを提案してみました」と説明した。

　隊員に本を手渡しながら、富村渉外官は１人は絵本を読み、残りの３人はシーンの演技をするよう伝えた。彼らは最初、誰も周りに聞く人がいない上に録画について知らされていなかったため困惑していたが、彼女は手作りのコスチュームやポップコーンなど、劇に必要なものを渡し続けた。

　２０１０年から地元の小学生を対象に海兵隊員と読み聞かせを行ってきたが、後日観賞するための寸劇を使った読み聞かせの録画は富村渉外官にとっても初めての試みだった。

　本は、フランク・アッシュの「ポップコーン」だった。ハロウィーンが間近に迫っていたので、富村渉外官は子供たちに録画されたＤＶＤでハロウィーンの雰囲気を楽しんでもらいたいと願っていた。

　彼女がディレクターだった。舞台上にいる隊員に、初めに英語で読まれる話を聞いた後、日本語が読まれている間に演技をするように指示した。

　リハーサルは１回だけのぶっつけ本番の演技だった。隊員はリハーサルのはじめは恥ずかしそうにしていたが、本番では、全員が堂々と演技した。

　「２か月後に21歳になるのに、子供に返った気がしました」と米海兵隊本部業務大隊のネイサン・Ｒ・マクレーン兵長は言った。「準備する時間があればもっと上手に出来るけれど、初めての演技にしてはうまく出来たと思います。」

　普天間航空基地本部及び本部中隊所属、クリント・Ａ・ライダー伍長は、「読み聞かせをしたことがなかったので、新鮮でした。私が言ってることを子供たちが理解し、お話が好きになれるように、子供たちにとってもっと面白く、はっきりと伝わるようにしようとしました」と努力を語った。

　寸劇参加後、謝苅区長の徳里徹さんは笑顔で「(海兵隊と)一緒に何かをすることはめったにありませんが、子供たちのために、一緒に寸劇をしたのは良かったです。楽しい時間でした。このような演技をしたのは小学校以来でした」と感想を述べた。

　富村渉外官は受け取ったＤＶＤに満足していた。ラベルは「ポップコーン」の表紙の絵であった。 彼女は、読み聞かせのＤＶＤを学校に提供するときに、このラベルの絵が学校関係者たちの目に魅力的に映る事を望んだ。

　寸劇にも参加した北玉区長の崎濱盛善さんは、「子どもたちはきっと気に入ると思います。大人たちが頑張ってくれたので、子どもたちはうれしいと思います」と語った。
