    5th Armored Brigade

Soldiers assigned to Task Force Thunder, 5th Armored Brigade, First Army Division West, dedicated Camp McGregor’s Mayor Cell in memory of Sgt. 1st Class Wavie Shumate at McGregor Camp, N.M., June 29, 2021.

The dedication of the mayor cell was to honor the life and service of Shumate who was known to be an outstanding and passionate Soldier. About two years ago, Shumate died after a car accident which happened when he was leaving Camp McGregor during lunch. He is survived by his wife, Tanya, and daughter, Alexis.

“What I really admired about Sergeant First Class Shumate was his passion to do his job as an OC/T (observer, coach/ trainer),” said Master Sgt. Enzo Llufire, Shumate’s senior leader, assigned to 5th Armored Brigade. “He was an excellent combat engineer. When he was here, he was such a great asset.”

Shumate was an inspiration to his family and Soldiers around him because of his hard work and love for people.

“He was a very good person to work with,” said Sgt. 1st Class Atila Dalmasi, an observer, coach/ trainer assigned to TF Thunder, 5th Armored Brigade. “He was a good husband from what I have heard from his wife and daughter.”

Capt. Farlin Reynoso, a chaplain and an observer, coach/ trainer assigned to 5th Armored Brigade said that he once asked Tanya if the Soldiers can go and see Shumate in the hospital at the time, and she said “Yes, we are family.”

Reynoso explained that the cohesion in the unit was beautiful, and their response in supporting Shumate’s family says a lot about 5th Armored Brigade.

Shumate held himself to a high standard, and some of his peers were able to share some lessons learned by working with him.

“People might not realize what you do on a day-to-day basis, but trust me, it is noted,” Dalmasi said. “Just be passionate at your job, and take pride in what you do.”

Llufire described Shumate as a role model who followed the Army standards and guidelines in everything he did, and a true professional.

Reynoso said that the way Shumate was loved was because of his commitment to duty and selfless service to other service members. He encouraged Soldiers to strive to be their best in all they do just like Shumate was.

“He was just a special person, and he meant a lot to all of us,” said Dalmasi.
