U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery

NAPLES – U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMTRC) Naples Simulation in Healthcare Advanced Practice Environment (SHAPE) center received provisional accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) on May 8, 2021. SHAPE was evaluated by a team of experts in healthcare simulation to determine if the simulation program structure, governance, and educational training met the standards set by the SSH.

This achievement is the result of nearly a year of effort by a team of multidisciplinary leaders including the Staff Education and Training Department Head, the Staff Accreditation Officer, the Medical Simulation Director and Corpsmen. Other Navy military treatment facilities (MTFs) and NMTRCs provided subject matter expertise, collaboration and support - most notably Naval Medical Center (NMC) Portsmouth and NMRTC Guam.

“The Simulation in Healthcare provisional accreditation of the Navy Medical Readiness and Training Command Naples’ Simulation in Healthcare Advanced Practice Environment highlights our commitment to prepare a ready medical force aligned to the Navy Surgeon General’s priorities – people, platforms, performance and power. Through the use of real-time, realistic medical simulation and modeling, this training enhances clinical knowledge, skills and abilities and ensures that we are prepared to support new and emerging Naval platforms while increasing the survivability of our fighting force,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Chad E. McKenzie, commanding officer, U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Naples, Italy, and MTF director, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy.

This accreditation directly supports one of NMRTC Naples’ strategic goals: to build relationships and increase coordination with Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa and allied nations, in addition to collaborating with U.S. Sixth Fleet. Additionally, the SHAPE has also provided both installation and joint training opportunities to the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Security, the NSA Naples Veterinarian Clinic (a U.S. Army detachment), and the U.S. Air Force 31st Medical Group.

“This is a truly historical accomplishment as NMTRC Naples is the first command outside the National Capital Region and first OCONUS command to receive the SSH provisional accreditation. This accreditation increases the value we bring to Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa by providing a regionally accessible medical training platform to support warfighters across the spectrum of Naval platforms and domains,” said McKenzie.

Full accreditation is expected to be achieved within the next 2-3 years and will formalize the simulation capabilities of the NMRTC Naples SHAPE - specifically the ability to develop and execute novel training programs and exportable training packages that can be conducted in-country for deployed personnel and partner nations.
