A Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir will feature prominently in a full distance triathlon that begins in the Tulsa Area, May 23.
Athletes competing in Ironman North American Championship will start the grueling 2.4-mile point-to-point swimming portion of the competition in Keystone Lake.
The Keystone Lake Project Office staff worked with local officials and event organizers to help make the event a possibility.
“We are excited to work with the event staff, our partners and local stakeholders to help make the event possible at Keystone Lake,” said Travis Miller, lake manager, Tulsa District, USACE.
Ironman triathlons consist of a 112-mile cycling contest and culminate with a 26.2 mile or full marathon. The triathlon was supposed to take place in Green Country in 2020 but COVID-19 concerns forced the event’s postponement.
Whether in 2020 or 2021, the Keystone Lake staff are looking forward to having the event at the lake that's under their care.
“Our staff take a lot of pride in what we do here and we’re excited to be hosting part of the event at Keystone Lake and in the Tulsa Area,” said Miller. “It’s great for us and it’s the Tulsa Area.”
