Meet AD1 Tiffani Witcher! Petty Officer Witcher is an #AviationMachinistsMate currently working as a Recruit Division Commander.
Witcher left her hometown of #Penhook #Virginia to work in #Richmond when she was 19. After some time working several jobs, she decided to forge a new path for her life.
“I was actually training to become a state trooper, and one day I just had a light bulb go off. I want to do something bigger, I decided I wanted to support my country, do something bigger than myself.”
She had a few different jobs offered, but something about being an AD was exceptionally interesting to her.
“I didn’t know anything about airplanes, but okay, that sounds like a thriller. Let’s go for it. You’re saying hands-on work? Yes. I love everything about my job.”
The job of an AD, or Aviation Machinist’s Mate, is to make aircraft engines and their related systems function properly. After 12 years, Witcher has worked on the engines of the #P3COrion and #SuperHornet . She doesn’t shy away from opportunities for new experiences.
“I’m all for the thrilling experience. We started seeing a different breed of Sailors coming into the fleet, and I thought, why not be able to train them from the beginning? I was like, I think I could be an RDC. I was definitely attracted to challenging myself and upcoming Sailors.”
Witcher’s challenge for her recruits is to remain focused during adversity. She reminds them that there’s something that drove them to become Sailors.
“It gets tough for me at times too, but there’s a reason I want to be here. I tell all of my recruits to stay focused on the bigger picture. Stay focused and motivated throughout their career, remember why they wanted to do this in the beginning.”
What’s part of AD1’s bigger picture?
“The whole God, family, country thing, it’s all me. From day one, I knew this is for them. I just know that this job makes them proud. Joy is in absolutely doing a great job in honor of the way I feel about them.”
Witcher speaks with her family daily, and likes to spend her free time fishing and kayaking. She’s also excited to take her jeep out now that the weather is turning warmer. She is also thinking about where she wants to go next.
“I’m trying to do Blue Angels after RTC. It goes back to the thriller. I want to fix engines, and be part of an air show to make people smile and be fun.”
