Nimitz Sailors Receive Individual CY2020 Awards

    BREMERTON, WA, UNITED STATES

    04.22.2021

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Sarah Christoph

    USS Nimitz (CVN 68)

NAVAL BASE KITSAP-BREMERTON, Wash. – Multiple Sailors aboard aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) were awarded for their excellence in job performance for calendar year 2020.

Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Myranda R. Brantley, from McCool, Mississippi, was awarded the Vice Admiral Robert B. Pirie Naval Air Traffic Controller of the Year Award. The award is symbolic of the outstanding contributions to operational readiness and safety of flight made by individual air traffic controllers.

“Honestly, I was so shocked to win,” said Brantley. “I am still pretty new to the air traffic control community and the Navy. I have only been in for 6 and a half years, and this is my second duty station. I do not even know anyone personally who has won the award, so I feel very honored that I was selected over other Sailors. When my division officer called to tell me, I was speechless. It is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments so far.”

Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Gregory Hall, from San Antonio, Texas, was awarded the Russell Egnor Navy Writer of the Year Award. The award recognizes the Navy communicator whose writing portfolio represents the highest standards of Navy writing within a calendar year.

“It feels good to have something to show at the end of this deployment,” said Hall. “I was really excited to tell my wife and kids about it and happy to bring home a “W”. My favorite aspect of my rate is being able to tell someone’s story. People all around us are doing amazing things, and others have no idea. I was able to write about [topics such as] a Sierra Leone refugee who joined the Navy and two brothers who were reunited on Nimitz through their service in the Navy. It’s an awesome feeling to communicate these unheard stories to the world.”

Additional Sailors who have been recognized for their accomplishments aboard Nimitz for calendar year 2020 include Electrician’s Mate 1st Class Joshua Nikkari, who received the Enlisted Engineer of the Year Award, Lt. Emily Gray, who received the Junior Officer Award for Excellence in Shiphandling, and Lt. Garrett Enslin, who received the Propulsion Plant Watch Officer of the Year Award.

All award winners have been commended for their outstanding professionalism and ability to demonstrate excellence within their highly demanding positions aboard Nimitz.

Nimitz is currently undergoing a Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) in its homeport of Bremerton conducting maintenance and refurbishment of shipboard systems to prepare for future operations.
