    SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) was awarded the Competency and Credentialing Institute’s (CCI) True North Award, Apr. 23.
    The True North Award is a highly competitive award bestowed upon one U.S. healthcare facility each year. NMCSD is the first Department of Defense or Veteran Affairs facility to receive the award.
    “CCI developed the True North Award to recognize organizations that use certification as a “true north” to guide their perioperative nursing staff to be lifelong learners, models of competent practice, and advocates for excellence and patient safety,” said Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Wymer, NMCSD’s chief nursing informatics officer.
    The Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) credential is the only accredited certification for perioperative registered nurses.
    The main operating room staff received the received the award during a ceremony at NMCSD with the president of the CCI Board of Directors, Tabitha Kinlaw, Chief Executive Officer Jim Stobinski and Credentialing and Education Project Manager of CCI, Dawn Whiteside.
    “Receiving this award is such an honor and is so important to NMCSD because it shows that we as a command are committed to lifelong learning for our nurses,” said Capt. Julie Canrardy, NMCSD’s Directorate of Surgical Services Sr. Nurse. “We as a hospital are committed to our nurses receiving higher education to help aid them in providing quality care on our path to becoming a high reliability hospital.”
    The True North Award winner receives a $1,500 for a celebratory reception, reception presentation by CCI leadership, commemorative recognition plaque, five certification or recertification vouchers, a press release and other CCI communication initiatives.
