NAPELS, Italy — A U.S. 6th Fleet Sailor assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eight stationed on Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, died Sunday, Sept. 27, at approximately 5 p.m. local time in a motorcycle accident. While driving a motorcycle near Mineo, Sicily, Italy, the service member struck a roadside guardrail.
The Sailor was pronounced dead at the scene by Italian emergency medical personnel and was subsequently transported to the naval hospital on NAS Sigonella's support base by NAS Sigonella emergency medical personnel. There were no other personnel involved in the accident.
The Sailor's name and further information are being temporarily withheld in accordance with official U.S. Navy policy. U.S. Navy and Italian officials are investigating the accident.
