Two New York Air National Guardsmen assigned to the 107th Attack Wing received Air National Guard awards for excellence in service supporting the New York National Guard’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, on February 20, 2021 during a ceremony at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Captain Bryce Bishop was awarded the 2020 Air National Guard Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award, and Senior Master Sgt. Donald Trzepacz, who is also a nurse, was awarded the 2020 Air National Guard Medical Service Senior Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Award. Both men are assigned to the 107th Medical Group.

“Both of these Airmen deserved these national awards and I couldn’t be more proud of them for winning,” said Col. Eric Laughton, the commander of the medical group.
Bishop received his award following seven months of service.

“I was deployed to Albany in support of the COVID mission in the early months of 2020 and we helped establish one of the COVID swab sites,” Bishop said. “I was in charge of our local medical team and eventually the entire site and then the whole region.”

“Captain Bishop possesses excellent leadership qualities,” Laughton said. “He has exceptional medical expertise and was clearly demonstrated during this pandemic.”
Trzepacz received his award for leading the establishment of the first COVID-19 rapid testing site in New York.
“Trzepacz is an outstanding leader and medic,” Laughton said.

“During this pandemic he repeatedly responded across this state to help ensure numerous mission successes. His skill sets coupled with his positive ‘teamwork gets it done’ attitude was the reason he won this award,” Laughton added.

“I had the opportunity to lead the charge in New York City, but I’m not a single person,” Trzepacz said. “There are amazing people in the Air National Guard and I’m humbled and honored to have even been submitted let alone selected.”

Trzepacz and Bishop competed against Airmen from 89 medical groups across the Air National Guard for the awards.
Colonel Gary Charlton, the commander of 107th Attack Wing, said he was very proud of both Airmen.

“This award is a testimony to their leadership and contribution to the 107th Attack Wing and Air National Guard. The medical group has taken on multiple missions in addition to their normal operations this past year,” Charlton said.

“I want to thank Bishop and Trzepacz as well as all personnel from the medical group for their hard work and dedication,” he added.
Trzepacz and Bishop said they were honored to receive their awards, and are honored to lead their respective teams.

“Leadership isn't a role. Leadership isn't a position,” Trzepacz said. “Leadership is an attitude. Leadership is a lifestyle, and I am blessed to be able to live that lifestyle.”
