BANJUL, The Gambia — Sailors from Africa Partnership Station Swift, along with Sailors from The Gambia Navy, repainted four classrooms at Wesley Primary School here, Sept. 18.

High Speed Vessel Swift is in The Gambia for a two-day port visit at the request of the U.S. Embassy.

"We thank you very much for coming," said Marie Y. Bakurin, headmistress of the school. "Paint is very expensive in Gambia, especially oil-based paint. Without your help, we would not have been able to tackle this project. Thank you very much."

This is the first official visit by the U.S. Navy to the country in 15 years.

"We've tried to accomplish a lot in the short time we are here," said Cmdr. Paul V. Gomes, mission commander for APS Swift in The Gambia. "It's been 15 years since our Navy has been here in an official capacity and we appreciate this opportunity to return. Coming to the school here today and getting to work alongside The Gambia Navy Sailors is really a way for us to say thank you."

APS is a multinational initiative under Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa which aims to foster cooperation between the U.S., European and African partners to enhance maritime safety and security on the African continent.

Swift, homeported in Norfolk, Va., is on a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. The ship has supported various partnership-building operations and training throughout much of the world.
