The grand opening of the culinary outpost kiosk at Fort Wainwright, Alaska was celebrated with a ribbon cutting on July 22.

The Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support worked with food managers from the Army Sustainment Command, the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade, the Army’s Joint Culinary Center of Excellence, and prime vendors to establish the kiosk at the base.

The initial request for the kiosk came a year ago from the JCCOE to provide base staff with an alternative to eating meals in a dining facility, said Jasmine Brown, DLA Troop Support Subsistence contracting officer for Alaska.

“It was created to give soldiers another food option and help boost morale,” Brown said. “The Outpost is a part of the quality of life effort for soldiers at Fort Wainwright.”

Many soldiers at the base don’t have vehicles to drive to the dining facility, she said. With the kiosk, soldiers don’t have to leave their barracks or battle the weather elements for a meal, she said.

This latest Culinary Outpost kiosk is one of a series of kiosks and food trucks DLA Troop Support and the JCCOE have worked on to provide dining alternatives at Army bases in the United States and beyond.

Located in the barracks on the north side of the post, the new kiosk offers a variety of grab-and-go items, including frozen entrees, sides, dairy products, desserts and beverages. It will be open seven days a week, including holidays, for three meals a day.

During its first 90 days of operation, the kiosk is only available to meal card holders, but will open up to the rest of the base afterwards, Brown said.
