World's Largest 10-Mile Race Coming to Anaconda

LSA ANACONDA, BALAD, Iraq -- The world's largest ten-mile road race will be a little larger again this year thanks to the combined effort of the community that will sponsor a shadow race, Oct. 24.

The 2nd annual Anaconda Ten Miler is designed to mirror the official race in every way possible.

"Our goal is to get about 2,000 participants," said Maj. Willie Rios, race coordinator for the Anaconda Ten Miler. Last year there were about 1,500 runners.

The Anaconda race is open to service members and civilians.Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category and each finisher will receive a commemorative medal.

The Army Ten Miler is an annual race starting from the Pentagon before going through the scenic parts of Washington D.C. and returning to finish at the Pentagon.

The official race is a major part of the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army and attracts some of the world's top runners to the field that is capped at 20,000.

Registration for the Anaconda race opens, Oct. 1, at locations throughout the LSA. Email registration will also be available.
