Resilient, dedicated, and flexible are words that describe Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Miami recruiters. It is because of these attributes; they have been able to maintain their high level of excellence while promoting safety above all.
NRD Miami was able to reach their recruiting goal for the month of March despite having moved to 100% virtual recruiting in the middle of the month. The move happened to promote social distancing.
“The team is adapting admirably,” said Cmdr. Donovan Rivera, NRD Miami commanding officer. “In addition, to handle the general personal and family stress and uncertainty we feel during these times recruiters are finding new ways to succeed. We have fully embraced the idea of doing what we can with what we have where we are.”
NRD Miami attributes preplanning to their successful transition from the office to virtual setting.
“Preplanning was critical,” said NRD Miami Chief Recruiter Rob Sanders. “We came in on a Wednesday and by Friday had a plan. It was important for us to make sure we did everything to make our Sailors successful while mitigating exposure as much as possible.”
Those long days planning paid off for NRD Miami.
“It was our people, our team that made us successful. Our Sailors are 100% dedicated to the mission and that is the foundation of our success,” said Sanders.
Recruiting is vital to the mission and overall readiness of the Navy, according to a memo from Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Gregory Slavonic to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO).
“Recruiting is an essential element of maintaining the forces health,” said Rivera. “In the short term, it allows us to keep current Sailors on track through a continuum of professional and personal development. In the long term, it allows us to develop Sailors we need to operate and maintain systems and platforms that are today in their infancy.”
NRD Miami is relying on passed connections to aid in their search for applicants. Rivera said they are relying on national local effective delivery system (LEADS) efforts and usage of social media to spread Navy awareness.
“We are leaning heavily on relationships we have previously established with centers of influence across our region,” said Rivera. “Our end goal is to make Naval service relatable to the average person and allow them to envision themselves taking advantage of everything the Navy has to offer them.”
While helping to maintain a healthy fighting force for the Navy, NRD Miami has not lost sight of keeping their most valuable resources safe, their Sailors.
“NRD Miami has adapted work practices and processes to minimize the exposure and transmission of COVID-19,” said Rivera. “Specifically, we transitioned to telework and remote processes early. We also continuously stress other sanitation and health practices consistent with CDC and other guidelines.”
Recruiters are using technology, such as fingerprint scanners and digital signatures, to help mitigate exposure for themselves and applicants. Now, the recruiters only have to meet with their applicants once, when they take them to military entrance processing station (MEPS).
“Recruiting is important, but the most important thing is to keep our recruiters safe and healthy,” said Sanders. “We are doing anything and everything we can to protect them and their families. This is the main reason we moved to telework as quickly as we could.”
The specific challenges they face may change, said Rivera, but their resolve and spirit to overcome and thrive in the face of those challenges will not.
The territory assigned to NRD Miami includes South and Central Florida, from Brooksville (50 miles north of Tampa), east to Vero Beach, drawing a line under Orlando, and then southward to Puerto Rico (PR) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 14 Navy Recruiting Districts and 12 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 815 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
