Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) Commodore Matthew C. Perry General Mess or the “Jewel of the East” Galley Culinary Specialists hosted an inter-service bakeoff and cake decorating contest in honor of Valentine’s Day at Club Alliance, Feb. 13.

U.S. Navy and U.S. Army representatives showed up to engage in friendly competition with bakers and artists from both branches. The contest was comprised of three teams with a minimum of two members on each team. The teams were from the CFAY Galley, U.S. Army’s Camp Zama, and the USS Mustin (DDG 89).

“It feels great to be able to compete against another branch in today’s event,” said U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Tiffany Wilson, from the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Camp Zama. “I have some new subordinates here today and this is a great opportunity to showcase their skills, on top of it all, I consider it an honor to face off against the U.S. Navy’s amazing bakers.”

The contest began in the morning, giving two hours to each team to decorate a cake with the Valentine’s Day theme. The teams were given the same ingredients to bake the cakes the day prior, so the main event of the competition was to see who could decorate the best cake. The judges would then decide whose cake best fit the theme and also tasted the best.

“I have to look at this cake and it has to wow me,” said contest judge Emily Hingada, a Defense Logistics Agency logistics specialist. “I judge not only on appearance, but also texture, moisture, and flavor of the final product.”

At the end of the day, the U.S. Navy team from the CFAY Galley, upon demonstrating their outstanding skills and tireless efforts, took home the first place prize.

“When we found out about the Army’s excellent training program, we were nervous at first, but we came prepared,” said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Petty Officer Justinne Ivanitskiy. “We did a lot of preparation for this event at the galley over the week so winning today just validates that training.”

For 75 years, CFAY has provided, maintained, and operated base facilities and services in support of the U.S. 7th Fleet's forward-deployed naval forces, tenant commands, and thousands of military and civilian personnel and their families.
