PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – To help increase warfighting readiness throughout the waterfront, the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) Detachment Pearl Harbor hosted its second Waterfront Tactical Workshop Feb. 6.

This workshop was designed to discuss the Undersea Warfare threat in the U.S. Pacific Command operating area.

“Over 35 warfighters gathered to discuss the threat and growing trends from our adversaries around the world and how to optimize sensor and weapon employment to fight the enemy and win,” explained Lt. Cmdr. Johnny Redford, CSCS Det Pearl Harbor officer in charge. “It is important to have these discussions so we can reinforce our understanding of tactics and develop proficiency across the waterfront.”

Each topic was presented by Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTIs) and other subject matter experts stationed at CSCS Det Pearl Harbor and Pearl Harbor based Aegis ships. Topics included threat overview, red force employment tactics, sensor weapon system planning, and operations and future weapon system developments.

Other participants included Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific and four Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers; USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112), USS Chafee (DDG 93), USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), and USS Hopper (DDG 70).

“These workshops serve not only as a local tactical forum, but they also provide a valuable feedback loop where recent deployers share current and relevant lessons learned with other Pearl ships in various phases of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan,” said Lt. Jeremy Jones, CSCS and Anti-Submarine Warfare / Anti-Surface Warfare WTI instructor. “These organic, grass roots discussions assist us to learn faster, making us better warfighters.”

The waterfront tactics workshop is conducted on a quarterly basis at CSCS Det Pearl Harbor. The next workshop is tentatively scheduled in April 2020. For more information, please contact Lt. Jeremy Jones at (808) 473-1822.
