The record setting floods last spring is a stark reminder that the Missouri River is a powerful force, capable of great destruction. We have been working nonstop since last spring to restore the levee system. To date, we have closed the majority of the inlet breaches and we will be working throughout the winter months to close the remaining breaches. Even with the tremendous strides in restoring over 350 miles of levees, an elevated risk still remains. Please stay in close contact with your local authorities and emergency responders. There are more than 500 miles of levees on the Missouri, Platte and Elkhorn rivers, and tributaries that experienced significant flood damage since March 2019. Due to the magnitude of damage along these levees, repair efforts will take an extended period of time to complete.
Omaha District’s focus remains on ensuring the safety of citizens and communicating the conditions on the river systems to all of our partners and stakeholders. The Corps continues to provide flood fight assistance to state, local and tribal government agencies.
