NORFOLK, Va. — Naval Station Norfolk hosted a pregnancy seminar June 25 to female and male Sailors who have either had children or are contemplating starting a family.
"I heard about the seminar from my command and so far it has been really informative, the questions I asked have been answered and other questions I heard were pretty in-depth," said Seaman Dustin Rector from Fleet Readiness Center Oceana.
NAVSTA Norfolk Command Master Chief Petty Officer Gregg L. Snaza noticed a need to have a day where Sailors are offered a "one stop shop" on information preparing mothers and fathers for parenthood.
"I think that we in leadership have a responsibility to every Sailor in the Navy," said Snaza. "There is nothing wrong having a family in the Navy. It's possible, but it is easier if you arm yourself with the right information and that is what we are doing today."
The seminar featured a wide range of topics with subject matter experts from multiple programs and facilities.
"Fleet and Family Support Centers provide resources to pregnant Sailors and their partners so they know their rights and responsibilities," said Margie Russell, parent educator, Fleet and Family Support Center. "We also elevate some of the stress that happens by knowing where they can go for assistance to get answers,"
The pregnancy seminar also included interactive discussions on administrative requirements and instructions, career planning, child care options, Navy and Marine Corps relief society services, new parent support, Tricare overview and benefits, PPV family housing options and Medical resources.
