Philadelphia, PA – 60 Soldiers participated in the first ever U.S. Army Week – Philadelphia event here on December 9, 2019 where local commanders accepted a city council proclamation commemorating the service of the Army to Philadelphia.

U.S. Army Week is an opportunity for Soldiers to engage with members of their local community in order to strengthen relationships and increase an understanding of serving in the U.S. Army.

“I would tell our Soldiers from the junior enlisted to the most senior leader that it’s important to participate in Army Week,” said Brig. Gen. Gavin A. Lawrence, commander of Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support. “We have a responsibility 24/7 to represent not only yourself, not only your unit, but the Army. We have to go out and engage the public so they can understand what we’re doing.”

Lawrence said it’s important for Soldiers to not only participate in events that help establish ties with local residents, but use Army Week to remember the branch’s history in service to the nation.

“To me personally Army Week is a point of pride,” said Philadelphia City Councilman David Oh. “I served in the Army and for me it is a point where the city of Philadelphia can celebrate the men and women who make up the Army in all of the events that go on.”

Through out the week, U.S. Army Week – Philadelphia 2019 will feature multiple events including industry social events, educational seminars, a business forum, and a cook-off between local units where civilians can interact with Soldiers and learn more about today’s warrior.

“We never want to be distanced from our military as if they were some mercenary force because our military consists of people like you and me, citizen Soldiers who take it upon ourselves to lead our country and influence the world in a very positive way,” Oh said. “The military is the backbone of our freedom.”

As video games and movies continue to shape perceptions of what Soldiers should look like in the battlefield, U.S. Army Week – Philadelphia 2019 will provide opportunities for Soldiers to not only highlight their respective military occupational specialty, but give the general population a real life look into military service.

“We are all ambassadors,” said Lawrence. “The taxpayer works hard everyday to ensure that we’re the best equipped and trained fighting force in the world so we have a responsibility to educate them.”
