Story by Lance Cpl. Jacqueline Parsons

    2nd Marine Division

Sgt. Stormy Mendez, a combat graphics specialist and the Reproductions and Graphics Team Chief with the 2nd Marine Division Communication Strategy and Operations Unit, exemplifies what it means to be technically and tactically proficient in her Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).

“There are a lot of components to my MOS,” says Mendez, “I am not just a graphic designer or an artist, I have to be able to support information operations and keep our reproduction equipment functioning.”

Taking the initiative to learn more about the other specialties in her occupational field, Mendez attended Syracuse University for the Military Photojournalism Program. Throughout the duration of the recent Marine Air-Ground Task Force Warfighting Exercise, Mendez used these skills to cross-train all of her junior Marines in combat photography. Combat graphics specialists need to be cross-trained in at least one other specialty to be deployable.

“My main goal is to train my Marines to be more versatile,” says Mendez. “It’s not about me anymore, I have to make sure my Marines are taken care of and learning constantly.”

Mendez keeps her Marines mission ready through technical training and high physical standards. She raises the bar- and sets it back down. Since high school she has competed in powerlifting competitions and shares her knowledge when she leads the unit’s physical training.

“Powerlifting helps me set the example for my Marines,” says Mendez. “I can’t expect them to work out on their own time and take care of their bodies if I don’t do that myself.”

Mendez was a member of her high school’s softball and cross country team, as well. Born in Garland, Texas, she enlisted out of high school with the desire to be the best and make a better life for herself.

“The Marine Corps has set me up for success and prepared me for what I want to do in the future,” says Mendez.

Sgt. Mendez was selected as the 2nd Marine Division Motivator of the Week for having initiative, drive, and passing those traits onto her Marines.

    Congratulations Sgt. Mendez!
