CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – DOUBLE TIME! MARCH!
The Marine Corps has many traditions, but none more popular or awaited than the Marine Corps’ birthday. The birthday is a celebration of the past, present and future.
The Marines and sailors of Bravo Company, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific, chose to celebrate with a company-wide run throughout Camp Smedley D. Butler that would accumulate a total of 244 miles from Nov. 4 – 8.
Each mile represented a year that the Marine Corps has fought battles for the United States of America.
The company guidon was passed between sections, who would then log each mile so the company could easily track their progress.
“This run is not only to commemorate 244 years of Marine Corps’ birthdays, but also to pay tribute to our Corps values; honor, courage, and commitment,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Jessica De Maria, B Co. commanding officer, H&S Bn., MCIPAC.
“We get to honor our birthday, celebrate our commitment, and acknowledge the courage it takes to get out there and accomplish our mission.”
De Maria invited all of the company to complete the final two miles together on Camp Foster. Marines that participated expressed their common values for the Marine Corps birthday.
“Coming out here today really represents the true meaning of the Marine Corps,” said Staff Sgt. Thomas J. Lewis, an electrician with H&S Bn. “Getting together, building camaraderie, and just celebrating our heritage - that’s what it means.”
