Indiana National Guard Col. Cathy Eaken, the 38th Infantry Division logistics officer supporting Task Force Spartan received the eagle-inspired rank during her promotion ceremony from Maj. Gen. Gordon L. Ellis, the division's commander, at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.
Eaken, a Greenwood resident, is one of approximately 600 National Guard soldiers with the division who are deployed to the Middle East providing leadership, command, control and in-depth staff analysis for Operation Spartan Shield.
Eaken, from South Bend, joined the National Guard approximately 25 years ago.
"I joined the National Guard because it's a great balance between serving my country and being able to maintain roots in my home state," said Eaken.
Eaken, a combat veteran, deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 to 2007 as the assistant operations officer for the 219th Area Support Group, and she sees many benefits to her military service in the National Guard.
"Being in the National Guard allows me to the support strategic objectives of our nation, a much greater cause than any one person," she said. "The benefits I enjoy from my military service include exceptional professional development, travel and cultural enrichment."
Eaken graduated from Ball State University in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in social work with a minor in military science.
The 38th Infantry Division, headquartered in Indianapolis and also known as the Cyclone Division, provides fully manned, equipped, trained and expertly led units prepared to deploy and conduct unified land operations for combatant commanders and to respond to domestic crises in support of civil authorities.
