SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.-The 50th Space Wing is scheduled to host Wingman Day Oct. 4, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, to provide Schriever Airmen an opportunity to come together and work as a team in the face of obstacles.
“Being there for each other in tough situations or celebrating with your teammates when they achieve something is what being a wingman is all about,” Jan Devitt, 50th SW community support coordinator said.
Col. James Smith, 50th SW commander, will kick off the day’s events with opening remarks followed by an obstacle course and Oktoberfest celebration.
The obstacle course named Opinicus Maxx, will offer multiple levels of team-building challenges. The goal being to help strengthen community connections, teamwork and camaraderie within the workplace.
“There will be a two-tiered obstacle course so that we have a course for people in various stages of fitness and ability,” Tech. Sgt. John Wright, 50th Force Support Squadron First Term Airmen Center noncommissioned officer-in-charge and one of the event coordinators said. “The highlight is a 62-ft inflatable ninja warrior style gauntlet and we are building other obstacles to augment it.”
Wright said resiliency and making connections have been big topics lately, and Wingman Day is an extension of the discussion through fun and team building.
“We highly encourage people to form teams and come on out,” he said. “Even if you’re not participating in the course, come out, support and cheer your wingmen on.”
Devitt said she appreciates the support already provided thus far as it takes a community to make the events happen.
“Watching the Airmen having fun outside and bonding really makes all the coordination and preparation for the event worth it,” she said. “My job is to serve those who serve.”
Devitt said she hopes after Wingman Day has ended, Airmen have strengthened old, and built new, relationships within their units and across the installation.
“I’m in the people business with the goal of taking care of Airmen and their families,” Devitt said. “The last seven years, I’ve put together events like this for Airmen, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
Devitt and the other event leads for the day are still looking for approximately 50 volunteers and require support in set up and tear down and running the events occurring that day.
