Sailors Give Back to the Community at Urban Harvest STL

ST LOUIS (Sept. 3, 2019)-- More than 15 Sailors from Naval Operational Support Center St. Louis and the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS St. Louis (LCS 19) volunteered at Food Roof Urban Harvest STL, Sept. 3, as part of St. Louis Navy Week.

The community service project took place at one of Urban Harvest STL’s seven urban farms de-weeding plant beds, harvesting produce and watering plants. One of Urban Harvest STL’s primary missions is to provide fresh produce through their urban farms located across St. Louis to communities with limited or non-existent access to healthy food.

“Volunteers are really the way we get things done,” said Drew Hundelt, Director of Agriculture at Urban Harvest STL. “We have a small staff and we really lean on volunteers and interns to get a lot of the work done. Today the Navy volunteers may not see the direct impact of their work, but what they are doing helps to keep us running to continue our mission.”

“I am terrible at gardening, but I really appreciate the impact that this has in terms of giving fresh food to local communities that otherwise may not have fresh food,” said Lt. j.g. Linzie Bogan II, assigned to the city’s namesake ship.

Working with Urban Harvest STL provided Bogan and his fellow St. Louis shipmates a unique opportunity to learn more about the St. Louis community, since it is their first time visiting St. Louis.

“This is a fantastic city,” said Bogan. “I’ve been talking with some of my shipmates and we all really love it here. We love the green spaces, the people and the barbeque; there are a lot of great things that St Louis has to offer. It’s a blessing to have the opportunity to come here. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our bond with the citizens of St. Louis.”

Coinciding with the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo, St. Louis Navy Week will take place September 2- September 8 with different community engagements occurring across St. Louis.

St. Louis Navy Week is one of 14 Navy Weeks in 2019, focusing a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America’s Navy closer to the people it protects.
