Story by Sgt. 1st Class Darron Salzer

    38th Infantry Division

Kentucky National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Steven Morgan, a 38th Infantry Division forward observer from Lexington, currently serves in the Middle East in support of Task Force Spartan, which maintains a U.S. military posture in the region to strengthen defense relationships and build partner capacity.

Morgan, who's served in the military for more than 18 years, joined for the benefits the National Guard provides but stays in for its dual mission to state and nation.

"I originally joined the military for the education benefits to go back to grad school and I’m still here, still like serving, and enjoy doing something to give a little back to my community and country," said Morgan. "The Guard has got a great mission.”

“I like the dual mission where we get to help people when we go out and respond to disasters, but you also--on the bigger picture national side--get to deploy to places like the Middle East," he said. "I never would have gotten to do this in my civilian life, especially the type of mission I’m doing here. It’s pretty cool.”

Morgan said he likes the family and friend atmosphere within the National Guard and military in general.

“Probably the favorite part about the job is the people I get to work with," said Morgan. "You meet people in the Guard that you’d probably never meet in normal life, and I’ve got friends all over the world now that I’ve met through the military.”
