Chatter amongst the crowd echoed through the Montford Point Marine Memorial as the 9th Annual Montford Point Remembrance Day celebration began in Jacksonville, North Carolina, August 22, 2019.
The ceremony was held by the Montford Point Marine Association, a nonprofit military veterans’ organization created in 1965 to honor the legacy of the first African-Americans to serve the United States Marine Corps.
“The ceremony to me, is a reflection and a remembrance to make sure we don’t forget the original Montford Pointers,” said Dr. Roosevelt Baxter Jr., a pastor, and a retired Master Gunnery Sgt. At the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Wilmington, N.C. “Being an African-American Marine, I wouldn’t be here if it were not for the original Montford Pointers.”
U.S. Marines from 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, participated in the ceremony holding a formation and presenting the colors.
“It all occurred there in Montford Point and so we hold a ceremony annually to recognize these men and the challenges they went through,” said Colonel Farrell J. Sullivan, Chief of Staff of the 2nd Marine Division.
On August 26, 2010, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution officially designating August 26 as Montford Point Marines Day. A ceremony is held annually at the Montford Point Marines Memorial to honor and remember the men who led the way to the Marine Corps that America knows today.
“We celebrate that, and so it’s not just what I consider African-American history. It’s Marine Corps history. It’s U.S. history.” Said Baxter. “They went to make a difference, and they made history.”
