    USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73)

Members of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) flag football team participated in a flag football game Aug. 13, against another Norfolk based command.
This is one of the many games they will be playing this fall.
“I expect this season to be a Success,” said Logistic Specialist 2nd Class Samuel Hill, one of George Washington’s flag football team head coaches. “Success being defined as ending the Season with a championship.”
The George Washington Flag football team has won the championship the past two years.
“We are trying to continue the reputation we have had the past three years, which is winning,” said Logistic Specialist 2nd Class Alexandre Brummell, one of George Washington’s flag football team head coaches.
The amount of games that are scheduled is based on the availability of the Sailors from the commands.
“Being the captain feels great, but we're all captains out there,” said Brummell. “I cannot see everything and sometimes people see things I do not see when it comes to calling plays or substituting personnel. It’s a complete team effort.”
Any George Washington Sailor wanting to join the team or more information should contact Brummell.
“It’s a gratifying feeling when you bring together a collection of talented individuals, from different backgrounds, and getting them to coincide to accomplish a goal,” said Hill.
There are about 25 George Washington Sailors on this team made up of multiple rates, and ranks ranging from E-1 to E-6 working together on the field.
“A team like this improves the morale of the sailors by creating a fun, competitive way to promote comradery, teamwork, sportsmanship, socialize with other people, and a fun way to work on their fitness,” said Matthew Pennell, George Washington’s fun boss.
Sailors on the football team get to work on their fitness as they play the flag football games.
“The sport of football period, bring the morale to all time high for the members on the team,” said Hill. “The excitement we feel when someone makes a play is genuine. We forget whatever differences we have individually, and come together to enjoy the game.”
Command sponsored events are used to promote camaraderie between its crew.
“Flag football gives sailors something to look forward to outside of the work day and to showcase their talents,” said Brummell. “Plus it creates a bond for sailors that would probably never cross paths on the ship.”
The Sailors that participate have the chance to meet new Sailors from their own ship and Sailors from the surrounding commands outside of work.
“I recommend everyone tries out an Intramural sport,” said Pennell. “Whether it be softball, flag football, soccer, volleyball, etc., you'll find intramural sports will not only help you feel better, but they will help pass the time during this yard period.”
With the just kicking off the George Washington flag football team is ready to compete to win the championship for the 4th year in a row.
