SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – As the end of the fiscal year approaches, Airmen with the 50th Comptroller Squadron financial management analysis flight at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, are preparing for their most important time of the year.
Michelle Strickland, 50th CPTS budget officer, said the end of the fiscal year is Oct. 1, but the CPTS begins closing out Aug. 1.
“The Department of Defense runs on a fiscal year [for accounting purposes] that starts in October,” she said. “It is our obligation to make sure we spend our budget appropriately and effectively in that time frame.”
Strickland said a financial management board consisting of group commanders makes a list of unit requirements and then chooses their funding priorities.
“We fund everything from toilet paper to mission-essential equipment in the restricted area,” she said. “This includes the dining facility, operations and maintenance. We work tirelessly to ensure the warfighters of Team Schriever have the best facilities and equipment to complete their mission.”
Strickland said her office aims to use all of its budget every fiscal year.
“We work toward yes,” she said. “We do everything we can to get each unit what they need. It’s our goal to ensure commanders know the financial side of their mission will be completed.”
Strickland said Schriever AFB has the third largest budget in Air Force Space Command, only trailing Patrick AFB, Florida and Peterson AFB, Colorado.
“Our budget is $154.5 million dollars,” she said. “We were able to spend all but $96 dollars of it. On top of that, despite our near 60 percent manning last year, Schriever AFB is trusted to receive any excess funds from [Air Force Space Command] bases that don’t meet their [end of fiscal year] deadlines, because of our preparation. If that doesn’t speak to the professionalism and excellence of our team, I’m not sure what does.”
Manuel Roblesreynoso, 50th Network Operations Group budget analyst, said the 50th CPTS mission affects units across the world.
“What we do here doesn’t just impact the 50th CPTS, it doesn’t only impact Schriever AFB, what we do can be seen across the world,” he said. “All of our geographically separated units rely on us. Additionally, all of our tenant units utilize us for accounting.”
Roblesreynoso said Schriever AFB oversees the budget for AFSPC Defensive Cyberspace Operations, and it falls on the 50th CPTS to ensure the command’s dollars are spent appropriately.
“It is up to us to come up with enterprise solutions for all of AFSPC,” he said. “The command came to us first with this and it’s important we perform our jobs correctly and at a high level.”
The 50th CPTS works with other units to close out end of the year financials, including the 50th Contracting Squadron, the 50th Program Management Division and the Schriever AFB group resource advisors.
“It takes a team effort, we’re all in it together or we’re not in it at all,” he said.
