JEFFERSON BARRACKS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mo. — The 131st Bomb Wing, along with community partners from the Lemay Fire Department, the Mehlville Fire Department, and the St. Louis County Police Department took part in a Mass Accident Response Exercise here, Aug. 16.
The exercise began with a simulated helicopter crash on the grounds of Jefferson Barracks. Guardsmen immediately jumped into action, providing self-aid and buddy care techniques and triage to injured victims, while firefighters and Emergency Medical Services provided care and transport for the more seriously injured.
“These exercises are an important part of ensuring readiness, not only for the Guardsmen, but for members of the local community that we would rely so heavily on here in the event of a major accident,” said Col. Ken Eaves, 131st BW commander.
The Guardsmen and first-responders from the local community took part in a three-day Counter CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) All-Hazard Management Response course leading up to the MARE, which included multiple table-top exercises and an opportunity to talk through various crisis scenarios.
Capt. Amy Cottrell, 131st BW plans and integration office, said the training offered in the CAMR course was extremely valuable because it gave the participants a chance to discuss effective command and control of a crisis response situation that would include several agencies.
The Wing Inspection Team tested the installation emergency management plan and several of the organization’s capabilities during the week, including bioenvironmental and public health. They also examined interagency partner processes and the ability to activate efficient incident command structures.
The entire group came together for a debrief upon conclusion of the exercise to talk through successes, as well as areas for improvement.
“The more we integrate together, the greater the opportunity for success during future operations,” said Cottrell.
