CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – The Marine Corps Installations Pacific – Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler Provost Marshal’s Office is now authorized to conduct field sobriety checks on all drivers operating vehicles on Marine Corps bases and stations across Okinawa.
This comes after the recent release of Marine Corps Base Butler Bulletin 5560.
1st Lt. Brian M. Collins, assistant operations officer with MCIPAC PMO, explains the important details of the bulletin:
Q: What does Marine Corps Base Butler Bulletin (MCBBBUL) 5560 say?
A: This bulletin authorizes the Provost Marshal's Office to conduct random field sobriety checkpoints aboard all MCIPAC-MCB Camp Butler camps or stations located on Okinawa.
Q: When and where will these sobriety checkpoints occur?
A: These field sobriety checkpoints will be conducted randomly by Military Police. The times and locations will not be advertised to the general public. They can happen at any time at any location on a Marine base. These random checkpoints will be conducted in addition to the normal gate sobriety checks that are done on weekends.
Q: What will happen if someone is found to be in violation of a law or regulation at a checkpoint?
A: Those in violation may face apprehension, losing their driving privileges, and impoundment of their personally owned vehicle. Additionally, if drugs or alcohol are involved, offenders may be registered within the FBI's National Crime Information Center database and have a permanent criminal record.
Q: Who is subject to the new MCBBBUL?
A: Everyone operating a motor vehicle (personal or tactical) aboard any MCIPAC-MCB Camp Butler camp or station located on Okinawa to include all III MEF personnel as well. Those offenders identified as not having SOFA status will be transferred to host nation law enforcement for processing.
