CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan — U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Foster participated in an Ultimate Frisbee match on Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan July 14, 2019.
The match was organized by the Camp Foster Single Marine Program. The Camp Foster SMP organizes monthly sporting events like the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, to allow single Marines more opportunities to enjoy while on island.
“We usually try to organize these types of sporting events once per month,” said U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Percy L. Gonzales, the Chemical, Biological, Radiological Nuclear, and Explosive noncommissioned officer in charge of Marine Wing Support Squadron-172 as well as the Camp Foster Single Marine Program’s vice president. “We usually alternate between Frisbee, dodge ball, softball, soccer, and other sports.”
The tournament had a total of eight players split up into two teams. The participants played two games where the first team to score seven points won the match.
“Our unit loves Frisbee,” said U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Dalton Lewis, a euphonium instrumentalist with the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band. “We come out and play any chance we can.”
A total of eight Marines participated in the event, six from the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band and two from the 1st Marine Air Wing.
To Lewis, playing Frisbee is a great way to build unit camaraderie and is fun for Marines of all ranks and ages.
The Single Marine Program exists to improve the quality of life, boost morale, and allow single Marines to participate in activities ranging from sporting events and volunteering opportunities.
