In August 2018, a damaging hail storm hit Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, damaging many of the Tierra Vista Community houses.
Iris KirkPilger, TVC project director at Schriever AFB, is overseeing these repairs.
“The hailstorm produced quarter plus sized hail,” she said. “This damaged the shingles on over 80 percent of the houses here, so we’re replacing them. Currently we have 31 structurers completed with about 38 remaining.”
She said providing quality housing is important for Team Schriever so they can stay mission ready.
“Shingles provide water durability for structures and without proper shingling and maintenance of the houses, you would see more rapid deterioration,” she said. “Framing members or exterior trim components could deteriorate more quickly because the roof provides protection to the structure overall.”
KirkPilger said TVC’s top priority is its customers.
“The team has been working as quickly and diligently as possible to ensure the least amount of interruptions to the members of our community,” she said. “They’re working to minimize impact as much as possible. There still are some working pains such as congested streets and limited access driveways, but at the end of the day we want to ensure our residents have the best possible living conditions.”
She said the shingles are designed to last around 30 years, withstanding sudden changes in weather.
“It is a priority to provide information and updates to our residents,” KirkPilger said. “On the website there is a hail repair section where people can review the schedule, sequence of work and duration. If there were another event, residents can put in a work order. We also monitor the property so we can respond quickly.”
TVC’s mission is to provide outstanding communities where military families live, work and thrive.
“The entire process takes approximately 10-14 business days as they have to setup and take down a safety system,” KirkPilger said. “Safety of workers and residents is paramount to TVC. The actual shingling process takes between two and three days.”
Lt. Col. Bryan Best, 50th Mission Support Group deputy commander, said it is important to maintain structures on Schriever AFB to continue to make Schriever a better place to live and work.
“It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “Echoing Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, we need to take care of our members and their families; ensuring their houses are safe and comfortable are things we can and are doing to make our Airmen’s life and mission easier.”
He said it is a top priority to ensure Team Schriever has the highest quality of service and housing.
“TVC has been quick and efficient so far,” Best said. “Weather can be a challenge and delay work at times, but they have completed a lot of houses so far. It’s a busy project but the crews are focused on keeping driveways and yards clean to ensure overall community safety.”
